Sullivan's Farm
Приєднався 10 гру 2010
Welcome to the Sullivan's Farm in the south-east of Ireland.
My name is Kieran Sullivan and I am a part-time farmer, currently covering from beef to dairy. There's plenty building work going on at the moment and if all goes to plan I'll be milking in Feb-2025. The big jobs are putting in a new slurry storage tank and setting up a second-hand milking parlour in an existing shed.

Slats and stuff
The building continues with slats now in place and back-filling around the tank has started. There's work going on out in the fields too and slowly but surely things are starting to come together.

Building begins on the new slurry tank
Переглядів 11 тис.Місяць тому
They came, they dug, they poured, and suddenly there's a new slurry tank in place. The layout of the yard has changed more in the last week than it had in 30 years before that. Still plenty to do thou with slats, back-filling, and more concrete to be poured.
How to get cows into the parlour and milk out the gate
Переглядів 11 тис.Місяць тому
There's dozens of small jobs to be done, but I'm starting with the headline tasks for the dairy conversion. The parlour is going into an existing shed, the slurry tank has to be built from scratch, and the collecting yard is half in place. Then, there's the cubicle shed, a few "roadways", and of course the heifers themselves. It'll be a busy few months and I'll probably laugh when I look back a...
Dairy is a go and there's a dozen jobs to be done

I got a thumbs-up on the loan application so I'm going to drive on with the dairy plan. There's lots of work to be done between now and next February, including putting heifers in calf, widening roadways gaps and filling potholes, planning new roadways, improving air and light in the cubicles, selling the next beef cattle, and a dozen other jobs I can't even remember now!
Graze on. Graze off.

Cattle are out grazing whenever there's a smell of a dry day. But we're not getting many of them. They're going back into the shed again in this video but thankfully I've figured out an easier way to get plastic and wrap off bales. Quick update on my dairying plans too and a word of thanks to the farmers who are getting out on the roads to say 'Enough is Enough'.

It's been a few weeks since the last video but there's a few things happening around the yard (and fields). The store cattle are in the shed and the weanlings are getting thru the fodder rape. There's also a few weanlings in a "remedial" field - two with physical conditions and one whose mental alertness I'm hoping to adjust!
Relieved to be in the winter routine of muck, rain, and fodder rape
Переглядів 6 тис.7 місяців тому
The winter routine has truly set in now with the store cattle in the shed and the weanlings into the fodder rape. It's something of a relief to have a solid routine again after the last few weeks of moving animals from field to field ahead of the rain, checking the weather forecast constantly, and wondering if I'm doing the wrong thing by them. There's a short update on the dairy plan too, but ...
Back home to winter after a short holiday

I was away for a few days with the family and missed most of the really heavy rain, but thankfully the damage done to fields is not too bad. We're into the winter routine now thou and next Spring seems a long way off.
Converting an IBC tank into a hay feeder

Winter is creeping in and the calves and cattle are being fed straw and silage outside. But I need to do a little conversion job to make it easier to feed the calves.
Fodder rape and reseeding: the pros, cons, and costs
Переглядів 6 тис.8 місяців тому
Outwintering weanlings on fodder rape does a good job on the animals and the soil structure, but it's not all plain sailing. And it's certainly not cheap either. So, is it worth it? I think it is for me, but that doesn't mean it'll suit every farm and every farmer. In this video, I go thru the costs and timeline for a process that hopefully converts an unproductive field into a self-sufficient ...

I've enjoyed the break but it's time to get back in the saddle again for the videos. I got a few jobs done over the past few weeks and I'll be showing them in this and the next video. These include fencing, getting cattle to the mart, getting a real quote for slurry storage, to name but a few. The biggest job thou has been managing in the rain and muck of the past few weeks.
Fencing, straw, rape seed, and see you soon

An hour here and an hour there, and the latest fencing is slowly coming together. But not before we managed to get a few bales of straw sorted this week. The fodder rape is starting to emerge and crows have my heart broke picking at the bales.
Can grass grow too fast?
Переглядів 4,8 тис.10 місяців тому
I'm waiting on a man to come back to me about the costs for a new slurry storage tank, but in the meantime cattle and calves are thriving well. Grass on the other hand is almost growing too fast and I'm wondering if there's too much nitrogen in the ground.

The sunshine one where all is good in the world
Have both a left and right exit,
Was doing a hoof trimming course lately and the lads there were say they see more issues with cows feet where exits are to the left or right and less issues where they exit out the end of parlour. The cows on the row nearest the exit have a tighter turn to make and are spinning around on their hind feet more than the cows on the other side and they are creatures of habit and the same cows will nearly always be on the same side. Just thought it might be of interest to you but it might not suit to have an exit out the end
Good decision going left , get a simple drafting system set up at the door to get yourself going , I wouldn’t put in stall work or a parlor at 3 foot spacing I think they are a bad job and I would prefer 2 foot 6 personally so be carefull what you are buying if buying a seccond hand machine . I would build the pit as long as possable and leave room for a few extra units so as an extension is easy down the line not to be busting concrete and changing things I’ve never met a man who left space for more units that regretted it
Also I would be more likely to go with a passage down the middle of that paddock and not down by the ditch , you could have long narrow paddocks otherwise and could be difficult to get to the back of them in a wet spring and if it’s exposed in the middle of the paddock it will dry out quick with the wind and not be getting sheltered by the trees and leaves falling on it in autumn creating a mess also you would want nice curves through the roadway not sharp right angles 👍
U have to be put in a robot milking palor only way to go going forward 😊
Good job
Have a great time at the wedding tonight. Im looking forward to seeing you in the parlour. Take care.
Good man kieran, shaping up to be a fine job, great progress
The man that 🎉told you bring cows out to the left is bang on our only go out through the cubicle and it's a bollix cow flow is very poor
Great job. Fair play 👌
Just on where the cows are coming out Kieran, would you be better off putting the slot in the wall at both sides, at least then when you calve down in January or February and cows are still inside for that month or 2 you can keep the dry cows separate with a gate in between the 2 cubicle sheds
I was thinking the same thing it also would make it easier if you wanted separate a cow from the rest for what ever reason
You are making great progress. Enjoy the wedding.
For keep the place clean and less water the catch I would put the exit inside. And you will have the scrapers to keep it clean.
That’s a better way for cows to leave the parlour, less chance of slipping and you could put a drafting system there in the future.
Great progress well done 👏
Best of luck keep going
Please be careful with bull i had to rescue a man from a bull one day he is living and well. But i sAid AI from now on.
Enjoy the wedding Keiran nice to get update on building coming out well heifers looking really well👍👍🤑🤑🥛🥛
Great progress being made. Enjoy yourselves at the wedding
What breed of bull are you running with them?
Angus. I’m not breeding replacements this year
Making massive progress Well done and continued success
Good stuff
well done your doing great
Old net from last years bales on top of the bales held in place by a tyre keeps crows off the bales
Good idea to hav an option of the cows goin straight out during summer or back to the shed during the winter. U dont want cows goin thru the shed during summer
Are u keeping on your job when u start milking ?? Id say keep it on for a while till u get goin if u can
Good man plough on. All the people who say dont do it wil never do any thing them selves and there just gelous. Ull only ever regret things u didnt do in life
There are lots of new entrants into dairying in the last ten years who are regretting it big time now.
@theoracle8560 what's the reason there regretting it?
@@paulfinnan1984 probably not realising the amount of work involved and the commitment of a seven day week job before they got into it
@@user-jh7zu3ih6ofair enough but he was milking before, left it and thinks it'll suit himbetter now. It's a bit different from completely new entrant
@@kieranosullivan02 he will do fine with the help of family members . its not a job for a person on their own
Might be worth scanning now, see how many in calf anfd tail paint the rest to see if bull.mounts them.
Hope the build goes smoothly. Haircut looks good 👍
Great job . Hope to do a tank and shed here too. Any tips for me
Spend huge amount time thinking and designing and hire someone like grasstec for farm yard plan and detailed drawings you can only pour concrete once
Great to see the progress, let the hair down at the wedding and have a session , god knows we all need a blowout every now and again
Super job having the slats pre grooved
Beautiful ❤
Hi, i have gone milking and im on my second year iv done mush same.as yourself. I started with 30 calves fo year one and 30 for the 2nd year. I put in a new parlour second hand tank. And i made my cubicals with 6×3 timber and it worked out with second hand auto scraper. The price of things have jumped so best of luck.
Well done Kieran. Great job. Looking forward to seeing the finished product
Great job best of luck with the project. You will be surprised what amount of filling it will take to back fill.
Put in new cubicles they might look ok but when cow's start pushing up against the old ones they start to brake and put in comfort mats
Kieran, fair play to you going all in.. it’ll be worthwhile when you’re putting the first cluster on a kicking heifer next year 😂 all the very best
Agitation point will have to be be at each end as you'll have to roof the tank before the end of 27 and you can't have agitating point indoors nowadays, but maybe tank being done a few years before the roof might allow it
Great vid. Great to see your plans coming together 🫱🏻🫲🏼 I put up a 6 bay shed 2 years ago, same dimensions as yours. Definitely agree with you about agitation point In middle. It's one regret I have I have 2 at either end but one in the middle would have been ideal
Id put agitation point at both ends, when you have the stone it would be easy to build up to it,keep up the good work
Best of luck
Making headway. Any sump in tank?
Say's the man who hasn't got the first one finished 😂😂😂😂😂😂 like it Kieran,
Great to see , Good stuff
Looks good. Only thought is that would tractor scraping the passages make more sense and be cheaper also as it’s straight into the tank wouldn’t take too long?
I milked cows for 45 years my advice to you is get a job there is full employment , you will have only slavery to banks and the co/ op, crippled before your time.
Delighted for you Kieran and thank you for recording the exciting journey.
Really good video, really enjoyed it. Keep up the good work
